What does Domain expiring soon mean and where does the date come from?

Where you see it

• Detected Problems: when you open the lead, the Domain expiring soon pill sits with its other problems. It is also counted in the Problems Detected column of your results, which names a lead's first 4 problems and shows the rest as +N. Open the lead to see them all.
• Domain expires: this row in the Live Website Audit shows the expiry date and the days left, for example 2026-11-05 (44d). It is red when 45 days or fewer remain and green when more remain.

Where the date comes from

While it audits the website, Legiit Leads asks the domain's public registry (the official record of who holds a domain and until when) for its expiry date. The lookup is best effort and waits up to 6 seconds. If no date comes back, the lead has no date and no row. Nothing is estimated. See Why is there no Domain expires row on my lead?

The date is for the domain the business actually registered, for example smithdental.com for www.smithdental.com, or smithplumbing.co.uk for www.smithplumbing.co.uk. If a site lives on a website builder's address such as smithdental.wixsite.com, the lookup asks about wixsite.com, not a domain the business owns.

Never an unverified hint

Many website findings can land in the Worth a look, not verified box when a site loads its content with JavaScript. This one never does. The date comes from the registry, not from the page, so the lead either has Domain expiring soon as a verified problem or does not have it at all.

It follows the latest registry answer

Each fresh audit of the site asks the registry again, for example when a prospect opens the lead's proof page (at most once every 10 minutes). A lead can gain Domain expiring soon as its date comes within 45 days, or lose it after the owner renews. If you removed the finding with Something not accurate?, it stays removed until you click restore.

If the domain has already expired

A date in the past does not trigger Domain expiring soon, because the finding only counts dates still ahead. The Domain expires row still shows the date in red, with a negative day count such as 2026-09-10 (-12d).
