What do the colours and numbers in the heatmap grid mean?

Google PageSpeed and Rankings · Updated September 23, 2026

Each square in the heatmap grid is a spot on the map, and the number in it is where the business ranked on Google Maps when someone searched from that spot. Green is rank 1 to 3 (the map pack), amber is 4 to 10, red is 11 or worse, and a red square with ✗ means the business did not show up there at all. The ringed square in the middle is the business's own location.

The colours

  • Green (1 to 3): in the map pack at that spot, the first 3 results people see.
  • Amber (4 to 10): it appears, but below the map pack.
  • Red with a number (11 or worse): it appears, but far down the list.
  • Red with ✗: not in the Google Maps results at that spot. This red is a little deeper than the numbered red squares.

Hover over a square to see it in words, for example Ranked #4 here or Not found at this point.

How the grid is laid out

The grid has 25 points, 5 by 5, about 1 mile apart, and reads like a map with north at the top. The ringed centre square is where Google places the business from its name and address. Each square is a live Google Maps search from that exact spot, for the keyword shown next to the grid, which comes from the search the lead was found in.

The numbers next to the grid

  • Visible at N of 25 points counts the squares where the business appeared at any rank.
  • Best rank is its highest position anywhere on the grid.
  • average is its average position across only the squares where it appeared, so ✗ squares do not pull it down.
  • If it was not found at any point, Best rank and average show a dash.

On the proof page

The same grid appears on the lead's proof page under Where you actually rank across town, with the line Ringed cell is your location. It shows how many of the 25 points the business is visible at and, when it was found somewhere, its best rank. It never shows the average, and when the business was not found at any point the proof page leaves the best rank out altogether. When the business is visible at fewer than 13 of the 25 points, the proof page adds a line in red: More than half your service area cannot find you on the map.

Good to know

  • A point that could not be checked during the scan also shows ✗, so one ✗ is not always a lost ranking.
  • The scan looks for the business by name at each point. If you changed the name with ✎ Edit Details, keep it close to the name on its Google listing.
  • The grid is a snapshot from the date shown under it. Rescan measures again and uses 1 scan from your monthly allowance.
  • The same colours are used for the Latest map scan on a client's page and in the client portal.
