How do I bill a client's monthly retainer through Stripe?

Retainers and Call Tracking · Updated September 23, 2026Agency Pro

Save the client's retainer in Client Setup, then click Create Retainer Payment Link (Copies To Clipboard) in the Retainer Billing card lower down the same page. The link is copied to your clipboard and opens in a new tab: it is a monthly Stripe subscription checkout created on your own Stripe account, so the money goes straight to you. Send the link to the client once and the charge repeats every month. Connect Stripe on the Get Paid card in Settings first.

Steps

  1. In Settings, connect Stripe on the Get Paid card if you have not already.
  2. Click Clients in the sidebar and open the client.
  3. In Client Setup, type the amount into Monthly retainer and click Save. The amount must be at least 50 in your currency.
  4. Scroll to Retainer Billing and click Create Retainer Payment Link (Copies To Clipboard).
  5. The checkout opens in a new tab and the link is on your clipboard. Paste it into an email or a message to your client.

What your client sees

The checkout is a monthly subscription named Monthly retainer: followed by the client's name, for the amount you saved, in the Currency set in your Settings. If you filled in Client's email (reports go here), that address is already in the email box.

Cards work everywhere. A bank debit is offered next to cards only when it matches your currency and is switched on for your Stripe account: ACH for US dollars, Bacs for pounds, SEPA for euros. Bank debits usually cost you less than a card, so it is worth having them enabled on Stripe.

Whether the client pays or backs out of the checkout, they land on their client portal page afterwards.

Before it will work

If something is missing, a red message appears at the top of the client's page:

  • Connect your Stripe account in Settings (Get Paid) first. Connect Stripe on the Get Paid card.
  • Finish your Stripe onboarding first (Settings, Get Paid). Stripe has your account but has not switched payments on yet. Click Finish Stripe Setup in Settings and complete Stripe's remaining steps.
  • Set the client's monthly retainer (at least $50) first. The figure is shown in your own currency. Fill in Monthly retainer and click Save.

Good to know

  • The retainer is your number and is never shown to the client on their portal. The Clients page adds up active clients' retainers and shows the total as monthly retainers.
  • Retainer links are made from a client's page, so they need Agency Pro or Agency Empire. On Starter and Agency you can still take a deposit or the full amount at the moment a prospect accepts a proposal, with Accept-to-Pay.
  • Changing the retainer later and making a new link creates a new subscription. Cancel the old one in your own Stripe dashboard so the client is not charged twice.
The subscription lives in your Stripe account, not in Legiit Leads. Refunds, cancellations and receipts are all handled from your Stripe dashboard.
